Born in New London, Wisconsin, in 1974, Jon Steinhorst was initially trained as a lawn boy, maker-of-ice-cream-treats, hay baler, all-star wrestling test-dummy, fisherman, and builder-with-legos. Steinhorst pursued the visual arts in high school and received a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a concentration in graphic design. Having also studied painting and photography at the Fachhochshule Hildesheim, in Hildesheim, Germany, Steinhorst eventually settled in Portland, Oregon, where Jon spent six years working as a Designer, Art Director, Photographer, Painter, and installer-of-odd-things. Through his work at the magazine and design studio Plazm, and as a freelancer, Steinhorst gained experience with a diverse range of clients including: MTV, Lucasfilm, Nike, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, NarrativeLab Communications, NorthShore Productions, the Office of Sustainable Development, the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, and the Portland Art Museum-Northwest FilmCenter.

In 2004, Steinhorst returned to the Midwest to pursue a MFA in film production at Columbia College Chicago. While concentrating on the writing and directing of his own material, Jon also works on other student and professional productions as a producer, production manager and assistant director. His experience ranges from an instructional swing dance video to Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion.

Steinhorst tells stories of personal struggle from the edge of characters' hidden lives. With an experimental twist, he seeks a mixed-mode narrative approach, which is conceptual and artistic yet palatable by a mass audience.

Jon has screened work in Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles. He maintains a part time job at Columbia College Chicago as an assistant to filmmaker/professor Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa. Having completed production of two new 16mm shorts in December 2006, Steinhorst is preparing for a heavy spring of post along with his final semester of curriculum at Columbia. Jon Steinhorst resides in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago with his wife, two robots and two cats.
